Wed, 23 Sep 2026 US rejects pleas from OpenAI, Anthropic for global AI standards

OpenAI's Sam Altman has called for risk evaluation standards, as have Anthropic's Dario Amodei and Hugging Face's Clement Delangue.

* The executives expressed concerns that the current pace of AI development poses risks to society and humanity, and advocated for a slowdown in response to fears about AI's threat to humanity.
* However, Michael Kratsios, a former Scale AI executive and tech advisor to US President Donald Trump, rejected the idea of new AI regulation, saying it was not reason enough "to pause development or constrain it with new global governance structures".
* Altman called for common standards on measuring AI capabilities, assessing risks, and maintaining human oversight over AI tools.
* Amodei stated that further development of AI tools requires "even more stringent standards of safety" to prevent the risk of AI being a threat to humanity as a whole.
* Hugging Face's Delangue emphasized the need for stronger global standards for monitoring and incident disclosure in AI development.
