Business owners say higher fuel costs are creating challenges on several fronts.
Businesses and residents in Hayle, Cornwall are feeling the strain of soaring fuel prices, with some saying it's affecting their ability to deliver goods and serve customers. The average price of petrol has risen to 161.3p per litre, while diesel is expected to top £2 per litre soon, according to the Office for National Statistics. Mark Nicholas, owner of The Big Pink Tree flower shop, said fuel costs have forced him to reduce delivery areas, affecting his ability to serve customers. Surf shop manager Justin Lapskas added that higher fuel prices are impacting imports and transportation of products. Local residents are also feeling the pinch, with one worker saying that filling up her vehicle has become "extortionate" and is putting pressure on household finances. Businesses are seeing wider knock-on effects, including hairdresser Emma Crossley reporting a decrease in customer appointments due to fuel costs making it harder for people to afford regular trips. Tourism operators have also noticed a change, with some visitors cancelling trips due to high travel costs. At Down the Line Surf Shop, owner Justin Lapskas said higher fuel costs are affecting import and transportation of products, impacting businesses across the board.
