Tue, 29 Sep 2026 Burnham vows to end existing pension triple lock in 2030 to help fund care

The PM was at times emotional during his conference speech in which he outlined his long-term plan for the UK.

* Ending the state pension triple lock from 2030 to fund a new national care service
* Paving the way for greater public control over housing, water and energy services
* Potentially reforming the UK's electoral system through a national commission Burnham plans to replace the automatic annual link with average earnings for the state pension, instead linking it to inflation or 2.5%. He estimates this will save £15bn per year by 2040. Other key proposals include:
* Repealing Margaret Thatcher's ban on public ownership of water companies
* Making it easier for councils to acquire private rented homes in poor condition from landlords who refuse to take action
* Exploring closer ties with the EU through talks expected later this year Burnham has also announced a national commission on electoral reform, which could lead to changes to the current voting system. The plans have been met with mixed reactions, with some welcoming the proposals and others criticizing them as "half measures" or "morally wrong".
