Tue, 29 Sep 2026 Household energy bills forecast to see biggest rise in four years

A typical household faces an annual gas and electricity bill of £1,999 from January, based on a key forecast.
This would take an average annual bill to £1,999 and affect around 20 million households on variable tariffs set by Ofgem's price cap. A 4% increase in prices is expected to be implemented this week under the regulator's October price cap, which will raise the typical annual bill to £1,723 for a household using both electricity and gas and paying by direct debit. Forecasters say the January price rise is "all but certain" due to disruption of gas supplies caused by the Middle East conflict and low gas storage levels in Europe.
