Wed, 30 Sep 2026 Energy bills are going up - here's what you can do about it

Household energy bills have risen again but there are ways to keep a lid on your expenditure.

* Wear thick clothes, use blankets and have hot drinks to stay warm
* Take regular meter readings or install a smart meter to avoid being overcharged
* Pay by direct debit, which is cheaper per unit than standard credit
* Consider fixing your energy prices for a set period of time (but be aware of exit fees)
* Look at all the deals available, not just what your own supplier is offering
* Change habits when using household appliances, such as reducing washing machine temperatures
* Insulate your home to reduce heat loss
* Use energy-efficient appliances when replacing white goods
* Consider grants for solar panels or other renewable energy sources
* Be aware of scams pretending to be official money-off schemes Additionally, the government's Fuel Direct Scheme can help repay energy debt, and most energy suppliers offer hardship grants for people struggling to pay their bills. People on low incomes may also be eligible for:
* £150 off their electricity bill this winter (automatic unless in Scotland)
* Cold Weather Payment
* Winter fuel payment
* Grants to help with insulating homes
* Local schemes offering grants for solar panels, heat pumps and other renewable energy sources
