Mon, 05 Oct 2026 Pentagon stops using Anthropic AI tools after blacklisting company, BBC told

It labelled Anthropic a "supply chain risk" in February after the firm refused to remove safety guardrails from its tools.
An official statement confirmed that the Pentagon has "ceased the use of Anthropic products", more than six months after Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth ordered the company to be phased out by late August. However, multiple sources have revealed that as recently as last week, Anthropic's Claude model was still being used in research, analysis and intelligence gathering for military operations against Iran. The firm had been used by the US government and military since 2024, but refused to remove safety guardrails from its AI products after the Pentagon pressed it to do so. As the legal battle between Anthropic and the Trump administration has played out in the courts, the Pentagon has signed contracts with other major tech companies, including Google and OpenAI.
