The education minister has warned it would immediately cost his department £20m a year at a time when it is already struggling to balance its budget.
The Holiday Meals Payment Bill has been proposed by Sinn Féin assembly member Danny Baker, which would provide financial assistance to families with children receiving free school meals during holidays. However, Education Minister Paul Givan of the DUP has introduced amendments that would give him discretion over when payments would start. Campaign groups have accused Givan of trying to undermine the bill and delay its implementation, while a Department of Education spokesperson says the amendments are necessary for budgetary reasons.
