Trading standards officers say AI is "super-charging" existing scams through clones and fake websites.
Criminals are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create sophisticated scams that can trick even the most cautious consumers. Fake websites, often mimicking family-owned businesses in the UK, promise high-quality products but deliver cheap imports from countries like China instead. These scammers use AI-generated images and videos to make their sites look legitimate.
Some common tactics include:
* Creating cloned or new websites that appear professional and trustworthy
* Using AI to remember victims' personal details and keep them engaged in conversation for weeks or months
* Creating deepfake videos and voice-cloned audio to impersonate friends or family members asking for money
* Generating error-free, personalized phishing emails and messages on a massive scale
To protect yourself:
* Never send money or personal info to someone you haven't met in person
* Research companies thoroughly before sending any money
* Be wary of pressure or urgency, as scammers often try to rush victims into making decisions
* Use tools like the Financial Conduct Authority's Firm Checker to verify a company's legitimacy
* Don't assume someone is genuine just because they have your voice or video on record
If you suspect a scam, report it to Report Fraud (0300 1232040) or Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline (0808 223 1133).
