Wed, 21 Oct 2026 Meta fined $25bn for 'lies' over user data privacy

The fine is the largest to date against Facebook's owner, larger than an $18bn deal with California.
Judge says Meta's lies went "beyond Facebook's data practices" and affected its core business practices. Company intends to appeal, calling the ruling "all but impossible to do business in New Mexico". This is Meta's largest ever fine, following previous lawsuits over child safety and Cambridge Analytica scandal.
