The world's biggest crypto exchange said $6.3bn of digital assets had been impacted by the incident.
$6.3 billion worth of digital assets have been affected by what Binance calls the "largest hack in history". The exchange said that around half of these assets, valued at $3.15 billion, have been frozen with the help of other platforms. Binance has vowed to cover all losses related to the incident.
An investigation conducted by AI-powered company TRM Labs suggests that the hack was carried out by a North Korean hacking unit called TraderTraitor. The hackers allegedly compromised an engineer's laptop and used it to make unauthorized withdrawals from Binance.
The incident is considered a "watershed moment" for the cryptocurrency industry, according to Ari Redbord, chief policy officer at TRM Labs. Efforts are being made to trace and recover the stolen assets, but the attacker still holds a large sum of funds.
Binance has confirmed that its platform in the US is not affected by the incident. Other major crypto platforms, including Tether and Circle, have frozen around $2.4 billion worth of assets related to the potential Binance hack.
The price of major cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, dropped sharply following the alerts.
