Tue, 03 Nov 2026 Binance says fake job interviews used as part of $6.3bn crypto hack

An engineer was contacted through a legitimate job-hunting platform and invited to bogus job interviews with fake company representatives, Binance says.

* Hackers stole a record $6.3 billion (£4.7 billion) from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.
* The hackers used fake job interviews and a compromised internal AI tool to gain access to Binance's systems.
* They targeted Binance engineers using social engineering techniques, including phishing and tricking them into downloading malware.
* The hack was a "serious and highly sophisticated security incident" that led Binance to suspend withdrawals for customers globally.
* Binance has taken steps to recover the stolen funds, including working with law enforcement and setting aside more than 100% of the funds needed to cover the loss.
* The FBI and other US crime agencies have been assisting in tracing the crypto taken from Binance's platform.
* North Korea is suspected of being behind the hack, but Pyongyang has denied involvement.
