One of Poundland's suppliers will lose millions if it collapses, while other suppliers have said they would go under.
Poundland's suppliers are at risk of losing millions if the retailer collapses, with one supplier estimating that it will lose "a few million" pounds. The sales director of Highcrest Retail Brands, Adam Turner, warned that some small and medium-sized suppliers may not be able to survive if Poundland goes under, adding to the potential job losses among staff.
Highcrest, which supplies confectionary to Poundland, turns over around £50m a year and will suffer financially if Poundland collapses. However, Mr Turner noted that his company is "a longstanding business that can stomach this", but expressed concerns about other suppliers who may not be as resilient.
Poundland's founder Steve Smith warned on Monday that two or three thousand suppliers to the firm, which only work for Poundland, would be directly affected by its collapse. He also stated that not only 12,000 Poundland staff would be affected, but potentially tens of thousands more.
Business minister Kate Dearden has expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding Poundland's future and met with Gordon Brothers, Poundland's owners, to seek "clarity" on their plans for the retailer. The government is also prepared to support employees who may need to find new jobs if Poundland goes into administration.
