Thu, 05 Nov 2026 Drunk and dangerous e-bike riders face on-the-spot fines under crackdown

A consultation will consider fines and other ways to clamp down on dangerous e-bike riders.

* Fines for riders who are drunk or ride dangerously on e-bikes
* Mandatory parking areas for shared e-bike schemes to keep pavements clear
* Requirements for firms running shared e-bike schemes to manage their fleets better and provide designated parking areas
* Potential requirement for operators to take out insurance so people can claim compensation if they are hit by someone on a shared bike
* Local leaders will be able to license schemes in their area, allowing them to enforce minimum standards and better integrate e-bikes into existing transport networks
* Measures could include requiring operators to have a parking plan and to manage fleet sizes and operating areas
* A consultation has been launched, which will last for eight weeks before the government draws up legislation to implement the changes
