Thu, 05 Nov 2026 Firms told to publish salaries in job adverts ahead of new law

The government argues the change will help jobseekers and could help to prevent pay discrimination.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is urging businesses to voluntarily publish salary information in job advertisements, ahead of new legislation that will make it compulsory. This move aims to promote transparency and prevent pay discrimination, particularly for young people looking for their first job or trying to support their families. The government has received "overwhelming support" from a consultation on the issue, with 94% of respondents backing greater transparency. Employers who publish salary details in adverts may attract more suitable applicants, according to research by UK jobs website Adzuna. However, some industry groups have expressed concerns that setting pay is a complex process and regulating job adverts may not be the best approach. The government plans to introduce legislation on the issue "as soon as possible" and will provide further details on what information will be required in due course.
